A Hobby Club showing various model airplanes.

Hobby Clubs started in the early 1900’s and were for men with hobbies.  According to the 1911 Constitution of the Hobby Club, Article 1 “The object of the club shall be to encourage the collection of literary, artistic and scientific works; to aid in the development of literary, artistic and scientific matters;  to promote social and literary intercourse among its members, and the discussion and consideration of various literary and economic subjects.”  To read the Annals of the Hobby Club click here.  Hobbies could be communication devices, trains, automobiles, or even animals.  Today many of the Hobby Clubs involve building objects like planes, trains, and cars; like Hobby Club USA which started in 1990. The photograph on the left shows a Hobby Club here in town, displaying various model airplanes with a show held at the fairground pavilion.
