June is filled with fun events at the High Plains Museum! From seeing Earth from a new perspective to building a moon colony June will have events for the whole family!
Currently showing at the High Plains Museum is the exhibit Earth From Space. This is a poster exhibit from the Smithsonian that features Landsat images of our Earth. These images are from all over the planet and show everything from Earth at night to forest fires in California. It allows us to see and learn about Earth from a new perspective. The exhibit also explores Landsats and how we use them. We also have our own immersive experience set up in the gallery as well! Surround yourself with the constellations and high speed tours of the cosmos.
The first Saturday of the month, June 1st, we will be having our Space Walk Program. This is a come and go event from 1:00-5:00 PM held at the Museum. This month we will be learning about solar system and we will make our own mini-versions of the solar system. Come and get a graphic representation of how the planets in our solar system differ in size from one another.
Ever wonder what it would be like to live on the moon? Come to the High Plains Museum from June 1st to June 14th and help us
build a moon colony! We will build our moon colony from recycled materials but feel free to bring your own materials from home to create the moon colony! We will have pictures of other moon colonies imaged from science fiction to serve as design inspiration. June 6th and 13th from 1:00 – 5:00 PM we will have special work days where you can come and focus entirely on the moon colony! We’d also like to invite you to make your own movie about Goodland’s moon colony. Bring your own iPad or movie recording device and start filming June 21st! Films must be completed and turned in the 26th by 5:00 PM. The completed films will be shown before the Movie on the Wall at the Goodland Public Library!
To celebrate Meteor Day on Sunday, June 30th come to the High Plains Museum and make your own comet! Come learn the difference between a meteor and a comet, when the best time to see a meteor shower is and make your very own comet! This will be a come and go event from 1:00 – 5:00 PM.
Come out and see us throughout June for fun space themed activities and don’t forget to check out our current exhibit Earth From Space which will offer you a new way to view our home planet!
